Butterflies:

 

Butterflies, an interactive Art Installation by JEA in collaboration with the Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival 2019.

The concept was created as an intuitive response to the plethora of butterflies that were present on the lands above the Bleeding Pig over the later end of the summer this year.

“It felt like being a child again, with all the butterflies that were floating around”

On further investigation, it became clear the wealth of butterflies had been attracted by the abundance of the wild flower that had mysteriously grown along the edge of the pathway/corn field along the cliff walk.

Further discussion with the local farmers lead to the discovery that the field had been sown by a farmer who was not acquainted with the local knowledge of the Quay. Usually the local farmer would come back in early spring and replant the boundary of the field with spring barley as he’d have known that the field edges would be scorched by the sea, leaving his crop scorched and as a result the edge of the field had become abundant with wild flowers this summer.

‘Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. Many cultures associate the butterfly with our souls. The Christian religion sees the butterfly as a symbol of resurrection. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life.’

Symbolising the beauty of transformation in the face of climate crisis – JEA reimagine a future of beauty, hope and fairness resurrected from the opportunity that presents to us out of the current destructive and disconnected society we have.

The installation involved the release of 22 timber butterflies at various locations around the peninsula of Donabate and Portrane, the installation was dismantled at the end of the festival and finally released at the Dublin Climate Strike
